1. The initial idea came as a way to celebrate the approaching Earth Day by making little Earth figurines.

2. When making Earth expressions, you can talk about whether the Earth is alive or not. (There is no consensus on the answer, so it is a good question for discussion.)

3. Next, it is interesting to discuss with children what expression the Earth would have if it could have emotions like a human. Would it be sad? Or happy?

4. Finally, it is also a good craft to make, while studying maps and atlas to reinforce the idea that different colours can represent different landscapes.

The moon is great to explore because it can be seen without a telescope or binoculars. Ask your child to imagine the different faces of the moon. Explain that it seems that the moon changes shape. This is because, as it orbits Earth, different parts of the moon facing us are lit up by the sun's light. Moon "phases" occur when Earth blocks some, or all of the sunlight that reflects from the moon's surface.

Materials Needed: newspaper, masking tape, paint

Children can create their own planets by crumpling a piece of newspaper into a ball and then taping it.

If you have a model of the planets hanging nearby, they can try to create a planet similar to Earth, Mars, etc., but why not create their own and then name it!

EVS: Night Sky Mural

Materials Needed:

Large paper; paint in blue, black, gray

Star stickers, bath scrunches or round sponges; variety of paint.

Directions:

Have the children paint the sky with blue, black and gray! Let it dry.

Decorate the universe! Use Star stickers. Use sponges to sponge paint planets, moons, stars, and the sun!

Display on a wall or use as your bulletin board!
